Journaling and Joy Day 4

For most of us, life is hard. I am not saying that it is bad; it is just hard. We often confuse hard with bad, but that isn't the case. I once did a two-week trip into Quetico Provincial Park in September. It snowed, it rained, it was cold and hard, and the best. Question 4 of the daily journaling prompts is:

What was hard today? Did you learn something? Did you ask for help?

The reason I added this question is that growth happens with effort. An easy life often is a life without adventure, a life without growth. I have walked through very hard times, and yet at the end of each journey, I have grown. I have learned how strong I am, how much I can carry, how I am limitless - but I have also learned to ask for help. The asking, for me, is often just as hard as the doing. But in the asking, I find community, I find that I don't have to always be strong, that someone else will carry the burden, that even though I can do, maybe I don't need to.

Hard isn't bad, easy isn't good. We were made to create, to learn, to explore, and all of that takes effort—and effort is hard. So if you did something hard today, good for you—you chose the artist's way.

Day 4 - Move

“We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.”

― Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

I am a plodder. In the race between the tortoise and the hare, I am the tortoise. I don't enjoy a lot of movement. I don't want to really sweat. I go through life at a very slow pace, and I am satisfied with that—until a really good song comes on. I hear a familiar beat, and I dance and make everyone in my vicinity dance with me. This does not come naturally to me - unfortunately I also have the rhythm of the tortoise. So I stomp around the kitchen, hands waving, head rocking, happy as can be, moving in joy. Movement can unleash joy. So today turn up a song, put on some boxing gloves, grab a sled - and move in joy.

“Do a loony-goony dance

'Cross the kitchen floor,

Put something silly in the world

That ain't been there before.”

Shel Silverstein
